Hand Knotted Kalamkari Sapphire Carpet
This hand knotted carpet with it's delicate and intricate design is inspired by the folk art of Kalamkari- a highly popular form of hand-painting or block-printing cotton textiles originating in Andhra Pradesh. As the name suggests, it is a form of painting cotton fabrics with a kalam (hindi for pen), this pen is created with a sharp-pointed pierced bamboo regulating the flow of colour on the fabric. Kalamkari is mainly of two types in India: Machilipatnam, which originates from Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Srikalahasti, which is from Chitoor in the same state. While the former refers to the block-printing form of art, the latter is free flowing, made with a pen on fabric. Today, Kalamkari art is used on multiple canvases ranging from sarees and ethnic clothing to home decor and depicts anything from flora and fauna to epics such as Mahabharata or Ramayana.
