Hand Knotted Red Bidzar 2.3ft X 4.6ft Runner

Bījār is a city and is the capital of Bijar County, Kurdistan Province, Iran. It is situated at 1,940 metres, giving it it’s name- The Roof of Iran. The term Bijar is said to have been derived from the word bajar (i.e. “city” in Kurdish). Among other originations for Bijar is bid-zar meaning the land of willow tree. 

Bijar is known world over for its elegant and ancient carpet and rug designs. What distinguishes the antique Bijar from other Persian rugs is its distinctive construction. Weavers used 2-3 wefts (foundation yarns) between each row of knots. The first weft was much thicker than the second and was highly twisted and inserted while damp and then pounded tightly down resulting in a highly durable and strong rug.  This construction technique is what earned the Bijar oriental rug, it’s nickname of the “Iron Rug” of Persia. 

The diversity in the range of designs can be attributed to the many different tribes that call this region home, including the Azerbaijanis and the Turks, as well as the influence of nearby neighbouring countries such as Turkey and the Caucasus mountain areas.
